| PM Dahal cozies up with Russian and Cuban leaders after chit-chat with US Prez - Sep 25, 2008 |
Kathmandu NewsLine: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal appears to be in a balancing act. A day after hobnobbing with US President George W. Bush at a reception the latter hosted in New York where he admitted that his party has relinquished arms for good in favour of democratic process, PM Dahal held separate meetings with first vice-President of Cuba Jose Ramon Machado Ventura and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavarov among the bevy of leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday in New York. It might be a coincidence only but especially the meeting with Russian Foreign Minister has come at a time when the relations between Washington D.C and Moscow has swooped to its lowest ebb since the Cold War over the conflict in Georgia. Add to it the meeting with Vice-President of communist state of Cuba, a former Soviet ally and U.S arch rival, PM Dahal might well be accused of double dealing. A source said that in the meeting the two leaders agreed to further consolidate the "age-old ties between Cuba and Nepal". CPN (Maoist) Foreign Cell Department member Tej Jung Bajhangi Singh told a local radio station that in the meeting with Russian FM, PM Dahal said that "international help and support" is needed for peace and stability in Nepal. In reply, the Russian FM pledged Russia's continued assistance to Nepal to build up its "defense capability", apart from helping develop its industrial sector, transport, tourism and water resources. Prime Minster Kamal Dahal also held a meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Richard Boucher Tuesday in New York. During the meeting, Boucher assured of continued bilateral assistance to Nepal while PM Dahal informed him on commitment of present government towards sustained peace, democracy and human rights, a statement by Nepal mission in New York reads. |
